Folio 11'' x 8¾''. 84 printed pages of text with illustrated panoramic end papers, eight colour illustrations, numerous drawings, sketches, cartoons and water-colours. SIGNED and dated 1982 presentation copy by the author to free front end paper 'For Edward, Lovingly, Pat, November 1982.' SIGNED by the artist to the title page 'Roland Batchelor.' Roland Batchelor first exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1937, his water-colours have been in demand ever since. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper. . The copy of Jarrett's book is Batchelor's own, with his address label at the head of the flyleaf above an affectionate verse inscription from the author. Roland Batchelor is an enduringly popular artist who specialises in a light-hearted and very human portrait of everyday French life. The sketchbooks offer a pleasing insight into the artist's process, with the undated example showing earlier stages of the process as Batchelor explores modes of representing the people he depicts, concentrating most on angle and posture; in the Normandy sketchbook we have examples very close to his finished artwork, albeit with evident traces of his thought and work. The notebook, meanwhile, a post-war issue of the Navy & Air Force Institutes with a note regarding paper shortage to front, contains extensive notes on various techniques as well as on his own work.
