He may be an Abel who is a keeper of sheep or a Cain who is a tiller of the ground, but he is surely forced to be these before he has the leisure to be a Jubal to play the lyre and the pipe. The culture of the spirit has the cultivation of the soil as its primary condition. This is a law of man's created being.' (p. 4) -- `The traditional African farmer does not need teaching that his faith and his farm are inseparable; he believes it, and his belief is shown by the way in which many of his farm operations are linked with worship. For the Christian farmer it is rarely so; the many who are influenced by Western thought have, to their great loss, learned to separate the spiritual from the material in their lives. Their faith is very much a matter of what happens on Sundays, of prayer, Bible, and morals. To suggest that the Almighty is interested in such earthly things as seeds and soils is shocking; to imply that He is concerned as to whether or not we have a toilet in the home is sacrilege.' (p. 15).
