Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This ground-breaking book maps the impact of medieval sea level rise for the whole of Britains coastline. Incredibly, although the disasters caused by medieval global warming and rising sea levels have been described as among the worst recorded in human history anywhere in the world, until now no attempt has been made to paint a complete picture of this vital element of the nations history. The author reviews the physical and historical evidence for medieval global warming, then studies coastal change in 19 stretches of British coastline, from Berwick-on-Tweed to Carlisle and Scotland. Its many maps, charts and photographs vividly demonstrate the changes described by the narrative. The book ends by analysing the effects of medieval global warming on Britains coastline, and some lessons are drawn for todays global warming. This book makes a seminal and unique contribution to the growing literature on global warming, whilst its focus on individual localities gives it appeal to anyone passionate about British local history. With Britain facing anew the trauma of sea level rise the publication of this book is indeed opportune. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. The tidal Thames in 1968, from Teddington Lock down through the bridged river, the Pool of London, and the enclosed docks to the estuary at Southend and Sheppey, written at the moment the Port of London still worked the river and just before the upriver docks began to close. Cracknell, an agricultural economist who grew up on the Essex shore and later wrote the standard history of Canvey Island, divides the river into three parts (the bridged river within London, the Port of London, and the developing estuary from Tilbury to the Tongue) and gives each its own character: embankments, bridges, and riverside buildings; the five dock systems and their nineteenth-century rivalry; the marshland villages, forts, and new container port at Tilbury. His own photographs record the Collier shooting Westminster Bridge, the Embankment art show, the Prospect of Whitby, the Royal Docks, and the Kingsferry bridges, and a postscript imagines the Thames in the year 2000. Companion volume to J. H. B. Peel's Portrait of the Thames (the non-tidal river) in Hale's Portrait series; this is the only edition. Index. Contents: Not One River but Three; The River and the City; Part One, The Bridged River: To God and the Bridge; The River Embanked; The River Exploited; The River Enjoyed; The River Ennobled; Part Two, The Port of London: Introducing the Port; The Pool of London and the Isle of Dogs; Woolwich Reach, the Royal Docks, and Barking; Halfway Reach to Northfleet Hope; Tilbury and Gravesend, Gateway to the Port; Part Three, Tilbury to the Tongue, The Developing Estuary: Introducing the Estuary; Gravesend Reach and the Lower Hope; The Hundred of Hoo; From Wooden Schooner to Super Tanker; The "Netherlandish Community"; The Four "S's": Southend, Shoeburyness, Sheerness and Sheppey; Postscript: The Thames in A.D. 2000, A Vision of the Future; Index.…

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Reprint. Hardback. Sunned spine to D/J. Surrey is one of the most beautiful countries in Britain - and one of the most threatened. With its wide open chalklands, its pine-dotted ridges, its vast area of heathland and common, and its many attractive villages and country towns, Surrey is indeed a lovely county. Yet in its very beauty lies its greatest danger. For lying, as it does, at the very doorstep of London, the country is invaded every fine weekend by an army of cars. Of course people need to escape from the drabness of suburbia, but all too often they destroy the very peace amd quiet they come to enjoy. This cruel dilemma, although not confined to Surrey, is more acute there than anywhere else in britain, and it forms a principal theme of this book. Contents: David and Goliath. Part One - Surrey Noth of the Vhalk. Part Two - Surrey on the Chalk. Surrey South of the Chalk. Illustrated and with maps. 255 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…
