This is a notably lucid translation of the sections concerning the conflict of laws in Bartolus's Super Primam et Secundam Partem Codicis Commentaria, a commentary on the first two books of Justinian's Code and its glosses that circulated widely in manuscript and was first printed in 1471. Taken together, these sections comprise the first comprehensive statement on the subject.One of the great medieval commentators, Bartolus di Sassoferrato [1313-1357] was a professor of law at the University of Perugia. His authority as an expositor of Roman law was immense, and it endured for centuries.
