Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. One of the most iconic popular songs of the twentieth century, "Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)" was written by Bart Howard (1915-2004) and first published in 1954. Initially introduced in New York cabaret circles and first recorded by Kaye Ballard, the song steadily gained popu…larity before becoming immortalized by countless performers, most famously Frank Sinatra, whose 1964 recording with Count Basie and Quincy Jones transformed it into one of the defining standards of the American Songbook and, later, an unofficial anthem of the Apollo space program. This original 1954 Standard Vocal Edition predates the Sinatra recording by a decade and represents the song in its earliest published form. The rear cover includes a contemporary biographical sketch of Bart Howard, noting the song's premiere by Felicia Sanders at New York's Blue Angel nightclub and its earliest recordings. This example remains Very Good. The covers are clean and attractive with light general handling, mild edge wear, a few soft corner creases, and a small area of discoloration near the upper right of the front cover. The interior is clean and complete with no tears or loose pages observed. Pencil performance annotations appear on the first page of music, including instrumentation notes such as 'Pedal,' 'Clarinet,' 'Viola,' and orchestration cues, suggesting practical use by a working musician or arranger. These unobtrusive contemporary markings provide appealing evidence of the sheet music's life in performance without significantly detracting from its display or collectible value. Unlike the countless later reprints issued after the song became an international standard, this 1954 first edition captures Fly Me to the Moon before its association with Frank Sinatra and the Apollo era. The rear-cover biography documents Bart Howard while he was still an emerging songwriter, reflecting a moment when publishers promoted the composer alongside the composition itself. The contemporary pencil orchestration notes also provide a tangible connection to mid-century performance practice, offering insight into how professional or semi-professional musicians adapted newly published popular songs for live ensembles. Bart Howard (1915-2004) was an American composer, pianist, and cabaret performer best remembered for writing 'Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words).' After studying composition and working as an accompanist for notable performers including Mabel Mercer, Howard became a respected figure in New York's cabaret scene. Although he composed numerous songs throughout his career, Fly Me to the Moon became one of the most enduring standards in popular music, recorded by hundreds of artists. Frank Sinatra's celebrated 1964 recording introduced the song to a worldwide audience, and it later became closely associated with NASA's Apollo missions, cementing Howard's place in American musical history.

The atmospheric cover is much worn and marked. Fortunately this booklet of 94 pages has a waxed cloth spine which has reinforced the book with stoicism and will. Both front and b…ack covers have creasing, user and storage marks. The pages are foxed and freely used. There are period creases, corner folds and closed tears about the edges. The text of this deliberately instructive booklet is unimpeded by the above. The contents may be used with considerate confidence and ease. fk.
