Hardcover. Copyright 1858. Original stamped blue and gilt pictorial cloth (girl in bonnet on front board, two smaller vignettes on spine) , approximately 4 3/4 x 6 inches, 171 pp + 2 pp publisher's ads, illustrated with 8 plates. Hardcover, good. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, approximately 1/4 inch fraying at head and foot of spine, open tear along most of the length of the front joint. Internally, first free front endpaper torn out, shaken, front hinge cracked, additional hinge cracks between a few of the gatherings, two or three dogears, light tanning on two adjoining leaves, probably from a vanished newspaper clipping, otherwise clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Children's stories, many set in New York City, plus a novelette, "Massa Charles and His Family" about a gentleman from Charleston, South Carolina, who marries a woman from Boston, which contians some stereotyped dialogue by the African-American slaves, but that said, a more realistic, and sympathetic depiction of their concerns, lives and interactions with the white family, even including a version of a Bro' (Brer) Rabbit sotry. Children's; Victorian; antebellum South. **********************.
