Softcover. viii, 85 p.; 19.5 cm. (SCM book club ; 232) [Studies printed in Advance; reset from 1963 edition: Methodist union catalog B1667] `In general I have avoided the more difficult and obscure passages, and concentrated on those where I felt reasonably confident that I could convey something of Paul's meaning to a reader with no technical equipment' (p. vii) -- `There are few Christian doctrines so puzzling as the dotrine of the Holy Spirit, and the best clue to it is given in the next few verses. To receive the Spirit does not mean (as a religion of legalism does mean) bondage and fear; the Spirit is the Spirit of adoption, who makes us God's children, and makes us know that we are God's children. It is the Spirit that makes us cry out to God, Abba, Father (8.15). It is worthwhile to linger over this word Abba. It is not Greek, but Aramaic, the language Jesus normally used. In that language it was not used for formal, liturgical purposes; it was the word a boy would use at home when he addressed his father in the familiar friendly way. But Jesus used it when he spoke to God (Mark 14.36), and Christians use it after him. Our adoption is not a matter of the liturgical service-book, but of the intimate life of God's family. This, however, is where we must pause for a moment. Look on to verse 23, and you will see that our adoption is something that has not yet happened. We are waiting for it. But in verse 15 it has so surely happened that already we are calling God Abba. It is through the Holy Spirit that both these statements can be true. God has not yet brought his story to its close.' (p. 43) Good orig. purple wrapper. Upper spine creased, top edge stained.
