Barrie, renowned author of "Peter and Wendy" and "Peter in Kensington Park", stories which never grow old in the hearts of readers. This edition of "Quality Street" was published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1950. It was the 32nd im…pression of the book, and the sixth in this form. The book, a hardcover, is illustrated with black-and-white line drawings by the great artist, Hugh Thomson. Briefly the play centers upon two sisters, both still single, who start a school for "genteel children". As we all know, there is no such thing as "genteel children". This makes for much mischief and amusement. Other amusement is afforded by the suitors of the two sisters. The play was a great hit on the London stage, when it was first produced in 1902. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is a handsome 1913 American reprint of James Barrie's classic novel of Scottish Life. "The Little Minister" is a tale of class discrimination and labor unrest. Of course J. M. Barrie is forever remembered for Peter Pan and Never-Never Land, which fantasy sits strongly in all our hearts. But…many Americans are not so familiar with his sentimental novels which take place in the fictional Scottish town of Thrums, which village was based on Barrie's own home town of Kirriemuir. Thrums is a weaving village, whose inhabitants owe their living to a harsh laird who controls their livelihood. There are three Thrums novels, which were Barrie's first productions : "Auld Licht Idylls" (1888), "A Window in Thrums" (1890), and "The Little Minister" (1891). The 'Auld Lichts' was a stern protestant sect which Barrie's grandfather had joined. In "The Little Minister", there is much unhappiness and disquiet in the town because the wages of the weavers have been much reduced - so much so that serious unrest occurs in the town, even to the point of rioting. There is, of course, the minister of the town (the Little Minister of the title, Gavin Dishart) who struggles to serve his impoverished ministry - it is his first. He is caught between his feelings for his working class congregation, the needs of the townspeople he ministers to, loyalty to class, and his attraction to a wild, beguiling girl, Babbie (called The Gypsy by town folk). She warns Dishart and the town-folk about the local laird, Lord Rintail, and of his intention to bring in militia to put down the rioters - for such have events come to. Babbie is captured and threatened by soldiers, but is rescued by Dishart, who has fallen in love with her, despite their difference in class and social status. Things look grim, but Babbie has a secret, which is revealed - but which I shall not reveal here. This novel, which examines class and labor issues, as well as Protestant foibles, is a far cry from Never-Never Land and Peter Pan. TITLE : The Little Minister AUTHOR : J. M. Barrie (Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, 1860 - 1937) ILLUSTRATIONS : Frontispiece by F. Bernard Partridge; interior illustration is an unattributed photograph of Airle Castle IMPRINT : Charles Scribner's Sons PLACE : New York DATE : 1913 EDITION : Reprint DETAILS : Trade Hardcover; 2 illustrations: the frontispiece picture, and one a halftone photograph of Airlie Castle; contains the author's brief Introduction; [xiv] + 510 pages; approximately 5" x 7 1/2"; cinnamon-brown, finely ribbed cloth with title, etc. stamped in gold on spine; small vignette of Peter Pan stamped in gold on front board; top edge gilt; frontispiece has tissue guard. No dust-jacket present (issued?) CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : The spine extremities are mildly compressed; a small spot displays on the spine at midpoint, else the spine is clean and presentable. The boards are four-square with modest signs of use: a wee spot appears on the front cover about two inches from the bottom, and about an inch from the spine; a small damp stain displays on the rear board at the top fore-edge corner (of no great effect), else clean and presentable. Gilt on top text-block edge is a bit rubbed, else the text-block edges are clean. BINDING : Solid INTERIOR : Clean and presentable with but near-negligible signs of use (tissue guard is creased). No marginalia and no signatures. F. Bernard Partridge (Frontispiece) (illustrator).
