Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 247 pp hardcover with publication date on foot of title page, same on copyright page. Illustrated hardcover in VG condition in original dj in new mylar shows some age toning, light soil and color loss. DJ displays well in new mylar. Toby misses his father at every turn. The way he had the work done as if it were a joke! The way he loved the land and the skies and the animals and all his days! Father knew how to let it show in little ways, too, teasing pretty mother, listening to a boy talk while all the time understanding without a word. At thirteen it seems as if the ache will never end. Grandfather feels sorry for him, but he's had to pick up many burdens; depression has come and the North Carolina farm must somehow provide. Aunt Jenny ministers to them all, as she has as long as Toby can remember. Aware how having the mother in the cotton field spells failure, aware how the boy will take a neighbor's courting. Aunt Jenny tries to tell Toby of the peace she has found. Toby's days hold heat and dreams, mischief, the hard labor he has always known, the glorious hours of roaming, turkey hunting, talking to his dog. There are the trips to town, the troubles shared with his friend, the changes precipitated by the new teacher, and the new neighbor girl. Toby comes to understand that in spite of heartache and loss new dawns burst up. His father goes on in him and what his father loved is still beautiful.

Hard Cover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Avery Johnson (illustrator). First Edition. Family Book Shelf Selection. Clean and crisp copy, some light wear to jacket - a bit of soil to rear panel. 5 1/2" x 8" with 247 pages. It has a very well-realized background and a convincingly vulnerable hero. The setting is rural South Carolina during the Depression, and it's clearly based on experience. The atmosphere of the small farming town is complete including the wide range of interdependent personalities who live there and the dialect has the proper cadence. The boy is thirteen year old Toby Butler and he has to experience, along with the usual problems of growing up, the adjustment to his father's death and to the fact that his still young mother is interested in remarrying. "I've been feelin' sort of cut off from my family" he says at the end, and his sense of isolation is strongly felt along with his close attachment to each member of the family. The special qualities of the time and place are there, so are the small details which are both funny and familiar. The main drawback to the book is that it should have been pared down--the nostalgic qualities are dulled by excess, and events tend to lose their poignancy in their attenuation.
