Very gentle edge wear to card covers; a previous owner's details neatly inked on the first leaf, else neat, clean, bright and tight. A unique tale of life below deck in… a 17th century East Indiaman, told by the Icelander Jon Olafsson. Olafsson departed for India in 1622, and his memoir documents the global voyages under the service of King Christian IV of Denmark: he spent several years at Fort Dansborg, a newly established Dutch trading colony on India's Coromandel Coast, from where he recounts from an unusual ordinary man's perspective local Indian village crafts, religious customs and garrison politics. Mads Rasmussen, whose own account of his voyages is also contained in this volume, served alongside Olafsson at Fort Dansborg, this time told from the perspective of a middle class churchman.
