Résumé : Sous ce titre, l'Association internationale d'histoire contemporaine de l'Europe a tenu à l'Université de Strasbourg en avril 1989 un colloque scientifique dans le cadre des manifestations du Bicentenaire. Ce livre apporte le texte intégral des 23 communications présentées par des historiens français et étrangers et la synthèse des discussions. De l'ensemble de ces travaux, plusieurs conclusions ont été tirées : Le gouvernement français de 1889 a saisi l'occasion du Centenaire pour consolider la République à travers l'échec de l'aventure boulangiste et aussi en rassurant les modérés. Dans les autres pays d'Europe, qui n'avaient pas les mêmes préoccupations politiques, la perception de 1789 fut très différente. L'originalité du présent recueil est de documenter la pluralité des réactions à cet événement. À propos de l'auteur : Le Professeur Jacques Bariéty est depuis 1979 Professeur d'histoire contemporaine à l'Université de Paris-Sorbonne, et depuis 1981 Conseiller historique du Ministère des Affaires étrangères.
