Munich: Schirmer/Mosel. 1996. 4to. Original white photo-illustrated wrapper, titled to front cover and spine; pp. [152]; with black and white and colour photo-illustrations throughout; minimal staining to spine of wrapper; else a fine copy. Second edition of the catalogue to the major 1988 exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe's work.Robert Mapplethorpe's retrospective exhibition Ten by Ten held at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, was held just a few months before the photographer's death in 1989. This catalogue, originally produced to mark the occasion of the major exhibition, gives a full career survey of Mapplethorpe's controversial photographic practice. Notably included are Mapplethorpe's explorations of gay fetish culture and sadomasochism. The often soft studio lighting and concern with classical ideals of beauty in his erotic work sit alongside some of Mapplethorpe's colour floral still lifes. Some of his most renowned portraits are reproduced in this publication, including those of Patti Smith, the body builder Lisa Lyon, and a variety of self-portraits.
