Encuadernación en pergamino a la romana, de la época. Una rara edición de la célebre novela picaresca y satírica, en clave, del gran escritor escocés, inspirada en Apuleyo y dir…igida contra los jesuítas y la aristocracia. La edición original del "Euphormio" ó "Satyricon" apareció publicada en cuatro partes en Paris, entre 1604 y 1614. La quinta parte fue añadida por Claude B. Morisot y la sexta es de autor desconocido. Barclay dejó Inglaterra cuando tenía veinte años y permaneció la mayor parte del resto de su vida en Francia y Roma prohibió su obra. Al final de esta edición aparece la "Conspiratio Anglicana", en la que se hace relación del Gunpowder Plot de 1605 contra la Corona. El "Icon Animorum" que constituye la cuarta parte de la obra es una interesante revisión de las costumbres de los europeos, de las gentes del cercano oriente y de los americanos, donde aparece un pasaje en el que se comenta y describe la costumbre de fumar tabaco después de las comidas.

Add to basketRara edizione di questo romanzo satirico contro i gesuiti. Scrittore scozzese nato a Pont-à-Mousson, Francia, nel 1582 e morto a Roma nel 1621, figlio di William. Giunto in Inghilterra verso il 1603, si guadagnò ben presto il favore di re Giacomo I; accusato in seguito di eresia, si stabilì a Roma nel 1616. Sempre in latino scri…sse, oltre al Euphormionis Satyricon, l'Argenis nel 1621, romanzo cavalleresco e allegorico che contiene allusioni a vicende e personaggi francesi al tempo della Lega santa. Edizione molto particolare poiché i quattro libri che compongono l'opera sono stampati da Iacobum Marci a Leida (Lugduni Batavorum) Olanda meridionale, mentre il frontespizio inciso e l'emblema tipografico finale con motto "vivitur ingenio" sono di Ioannem Ianssonium stampatore ad Amsterdam. A quest'ultimo si attribuisce l'opera. Il nome dello stampatore e il paese di stampa secondaria si trova su ogni frontespizio delle ultime tre parti dell'opera. Non comune questa cooperazione tra gli stampatori del '600. Frontespizio finemente inciso, tagli rossi, legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, quattro nervi al dorso con titoli ad inchiostro e capitelli. Esemplare perfetto, nessuna imperfezione. Legatura in piena pergamena coeva, pp. 6, 694, 4, in 24°.

'Io Barclaii Argenis' is an allegorical novel about a princess who must choose between three suitors, and this work went on to have a great influence on the development of the Romance genre in the 17th century. The novel is written in Latin and was first published in 1621; this edition was published in 1659.

The book is presented as a adventure- and travel novel but contains covert political content and was explicitly written as a continuation of Argenis. Very nice set.
