Posthumous Collection, containing Fairy Tales, Christmas Fragments. Hardcover Format. Michael Fairless was the pseudonym of Margaret Fairless Barber, a Christian inspirational writer of delicate sensibility, and even more delicate physical constitution. Her book "The Roadmender" was hugely popular, and was reprinted numerous times through the years. "The Grey Brethren" was a posthumous publication, issued in 1905. This is the First American Edition, issued by E. P. Dutton. It is a collection of fragments in verse and prose, including four fairy tales intended for juvenile audience. The labels are lettered gilt on cream. Top edge gilt CONDITION - GOOD PLUS / NEAR VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which has been read, likely more than once, but which remains clean and serviceable, the following noted: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are frayed; joints rubbed; board corner tips softly bumped, with slight splitting of fabric. Spine title label displays a bit of edge roughness and slight surface roughness - else the exterior is clean and unmarked. The top edge gilding is considerable rubbed, but clean; fore- and bottom text-block edges are toned , else clean. BINDING : The book's text-block, having been read more than once, is not as tight as when issued, the leaves opening widely and the whole being slightly shaken; however no leaves are detached or loose, the whole remaining fairly solid. INTERIOR : The end-papers are foxed; there is light scattered foxing and spotting throughout, as well as a few small smudges, but basically the interior is clean and presentable, with no writing or marginalia. No signatures.

The pages are somewhat rippled & the versos of the pages of gray stock are darkened. The rear endpaper is darkened & there is offsetting to the front endpaper from the bookplate on the front pastedown. Good. Former owner's signature to front flyleaf; endpapers and flyleaf versos show mounted clippings about the author Fairless, with offsetting onto adjacent blanks; the clippings are interesting insofar as, at the time of publication, the authorship was somewhat mysterious, and eventually "Michael Fairless" was revealed to be a pseudonym of deceased Yorkshire author Margaret Barber.
