Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Separately issued printing of a Balcomb Greene paper delivered at Duke University, December 7, 1961, as the first Benjamin N. Duke Lecture, and subsequently published in the South Atlantic Quarterly, Summer 1962, Vol. LXI, no. 3. 8vo (6" x 9.25"), printed stapled wrappers, 15 pages.… Published in 1962 by Duke University Press. A scarce theoretical statement by the American abstract painter and founding member of American Abstract Artists. Greene examines the tension between individual freedom and social organization, moving from the Enlightenment and nationalism through communism, fascism, and modern mass society to the particular predicament of the contemporary artist. An unusually substantive piece of writing by an important participant in the development of American abstraction, documenting Greene not simply as painter but as artist-intellectual engaged with the political and philosophical implications of modernism. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities. Limited foxing to edges of front wrapper. Small damp stain to spine tail throughout; contents otherwise clean and bright.
