Nessuno più dei Portoghesi ha compiuto così numerose esplorazioni. Furono essi i primi in Europa ad esplorare la sconosciuta costa dell'Africa occidentale doppiando il Capo di Buona Speranza e a compiere il primo viaggio oceanico da Occidente a Oriente nel 1497-99; Cabral pervenne in Brasile nel 1500, e d'altronde lo stesso Cristoforo Colombo aveva appreso l'arte della navigazione proprio dai Portoghesi. Alla fine del Cinquecento, la bandiera di questa nazione sventolava in ogni parte del mondo.
