Translated from the German by Sheila Ann Ogilvie. Originally published in Germany in 1956 under the title Die Kunst Cézannes. Hardcover in the publisher's original grey cloth, with the original pictorial dust jacket. The binding is firm and the text is unmarked throughout. There is a stain to the cloth cover, while the front joint is exposed internally between the front pastedown and the free endpaper, with the underlying binding material visible. Remnants of an adhesive sticker are present on the rear endpaper. The dust jacket exhibits staining, rubbing and wear around the edges and spine extremities, together with a localised area of surface abrasion affecting the illustration on the front panel, principally around Cézanne's forehead. Kurt Badt (1890-1973) was a German art historian whose work made an important contribution to twentieth-century interpretations of European painting, particularly through his insistence upon the close examination of pictorial structure and the internal relationships through which individual works achieve their formal coherence. His scholarship developed an approach to art history concerned with the organisation of the painted image, placing considerable emphasis upon the artist's compositional decisions and the visual relationships established within the work itself. The Art of Cézanne represents one of Badt's major contributions to the interpretation of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), whose paintings exerted a profound influence upon the development of modern European art. Rather than treating Cézanne's achievement principally through biography or the conventional historical progression from Impressionism towards Cubism, Badt investigates the particular organisation of his paintings, examining how the relationships between colour, form and spatial construction contribute to their distinctive pictorial character. Through detailed consideration of Cézanne's artistic procedures, Badt addresses the painter's treatment of landscape, still life and the human figure, together with the difficulties involved in understanding paintings whose apparent simplicity conceals exceptionally complex compositional decisions. His interpretations belong to a broader tradition of German art-historical scholarship in which the individual work of art is approached as an internally organised achievement requiring sustained visual investigation. The book is of particular interest to readers concerned with Cézanne's artistic development, the history of Post-Impressionism and the intellectual foundations of modern art criticism.
