Clewing spielte zunächst Theater in Bromberg, Straßburg und 1911-20 am Kgl. Schauspielhaus Berlin, ließ dann aber als Schüler von Francesco d'Andrade seine Stimme ausbilden und sang nach ersten Operngast…spielen seit 1922 an der Berliner Staatsoper und 1924/25 auch bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. 1911 bis 1920 spielte er auch in einigen frühen Stummfilmen mit. 1926 beendete er seine Bühnenkarriere und lehrte als Professor am Berliner und am Wiener Konservatorium, daneben war er künstlerischer Produktionsleiter beim Schallplattenlabel Telefunken. 1933 trat er der NSDAP, der SA und der SS bei, wurde jedoch 1934 wieder ausgeschlossen, da er seine "jüdische Versippung" und die frühere Zugehörigkeit zu einer Freimaurerloge verschwiegen hatte. Clewing war jedoch auch passionierter Jäger und Sammler zur Jagdkultur und -geschichte und wurde daher später von Hermann Göring (in seiner Funktion als Reichsjägermeister), den er persönlich kannte und der ihn wohl auch protegierte, beauftragt die Publikationsreihe "Denkmäler deutscher Jagdkultur" herauszugeben. 1939 schrieb Clewing eine Kantate zur Geburt von Görings Tochter Edda. Über die beiden Berliner Photographen Otto Becker und Heinrich Maass ist wenig bekannt. Beide betrieben Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts eigene Ateliers in Berlin, bevor sie 1902 dort ein gemeinsames Atelier gründeten. Dort portraitierten sie u.a. viele prominente Schauspieler, Tänzer und Stummfilmstars, aber auch den Dichter Gerhart Hauptmann oder den noch jungen Verleger Ernst Rowohlt.
