From the foreword: "Botanical S…urvey of India publishes results of its scientific activities under four series. The first series deals with Flora of India publications in the form of volumes of Flora of India and Fascicles; the second series deals with state floras and the third with District floras. In addition to these, critical taxonomic revisions, monographic accounts and miscellaneous works are published under series-4. The present book "Taxonomic Revision of Hedyotis L. (Rubiaceae) in Indian Sub-Continent" by Drs. Ratna Dutta and D.B. Deb is one such work published under series-4. The present investigation of genus Hedyotis L. is a result of extensive studies of herbarium specimens housed in major herbaria of India. Out of 515 species found in the world, the book deals with 74 species occurring in the sub-continent. Taxonomists all over the world are not unanimous on the generic limits of Hedyotis L. has been enlarged on reassessment of characters used by earlier workers, and Oldenlandia L. and Kohautia cham and Schlechtd. have been merged under it. The genus has been treated under 7 sections namely sect. Hedyotis represented by 8 species, sect. Oldenlandia by 18 species, sect. Kohautia and sect. Scleromitrion by 5 species each, sect. Involucrella by single species, sect. Diplophragma by 35 species and sect. Antidopsis represented by 2 species. Authors have taken support from pollen studies and seed morphology to substantiate their taxonomic decisions. This comprehensive taxonomic revision is written and presented in complete from and should serve as a useful manual to facilitate the identification of this highly specialised groups of plants not only in India, but also in neighbouring countries of the sub-continent. Authors have examined all the types or their photographs or all the names involved number of line drawings showing important diagnostic details for almost all the taxa included in this work will be of special interest to botanists in general and taxonomists in particular. Elaborate notes and lists of specimens examined are additional features of this book.".

Dalits remained for centuries economically deprived and socially depressed under the influence of the Hindu society and its orthodox laws. After independence the policy of protective discrimination was initiated. But the package of protective discrimination have been failed to improve the human development of Dalits even after sixty years of independence. Moreover a debate is going on at national level on the issue of creamy layer among the Dalits. Now the question is that whether the human development of Dalits is increasing or decreasing. Human development indicates the socio economic political and cultural development of the people. According to UNDP reports human development index has been improved in India. But the human development report of 1996 noted that the globalization causing greatly for the rise of levels of inequality and widening the gap between rich and poor particularly in the field of social services like education and health. Privatization of education has been the role model for all successive governments which required to be understood in the context of globalization. Thousands of farmers have committed suicides in India in general and Andhra Pradesh in the past ten years is known and seen by media policy makers researchers and social workers. Now a days seeds fertilizers and pesticide dealers are at the centre of growing controversy in India and Andhra Pradesh as they are the new money lenders to a peasantry strapped for credit. In order to get rid of their financial crisis ill treatment and harassment by the money lenders the poor farmers have committed suicides as there is nobody to hear their last cry. For many in Andhra Pradesh's Agrarian crisis even death is not the end of the trouble. Instead it is the beginning of a new burden for the surviving women such as mothers wives and daughters of the suicide committing farmers. To begin with they were doing the bulk of the work. Now they have to face the banks and the money lenders. They have to bring up the children and send them to schools. Raising and spending money for the needs of the households becomes their job. And on top of it all they have to run the farm. Sometimes the pressure becomes too much. In this struggle against poverty and sudden death (suicides) by their male members in the family the stress on the widows is enormous. In this context the literature on farmers suicides is available to some extent but no study has been taken up so far on the impact of the suicides farmers on women. Hence as an issue of major policy concern it commands high reason priority. 186 pp.
