Éd. orig. de l'importante traduction par Corvisart (1755-1821), de ce texte de Leopold Avenbrugger (1722-1809), qui a paru pour la 1re fois à Vienne en latin en 1761. L'ouvrage fut traduit en français pour la 1re fois en 1770 par Rozière de La Chassagne. Corvisart qui pratiqua longtemps la technique de la percussion, apporta les résultats de sa propre expérience, et enrichit considérablement le texte. Il en donne ici une toute nouvelle version, largement annotée et modifiée ; il réécrit l'ouvrage en quelque sorte. Corvisart joua un rôle essentiel, popularisa la technique de la percussion dans l'examen clinique, en l'enseignant à ses élèves, ce qui prépara la voie à Laënnec.
