On the front flap of the dust-jacket of "First Lines : Poems Written in Youth, from Herbert to Heaney" is printed the following : "Jon Stallworthy has collected verses written in youth - often the very first preserved poems - by British, Irish, American,…and Commonwealth writers. The choice is governed by more than curiosity value; each piece is notable for its imagery, form or wit. The intention is to show what young writers have done that is durable and excellent, as a measure of what might be done today. The book demonstrates the necessary disciplines that come before real poetry and the delights those disciplines yield." TITLE : First Lines : Poems Written in Youth, from Herbert to Heaney EDITOR : Jon Stallworthy (Jon Howie Stallworthy, 1935 - 2014; Poet, Literary Critic, and Editor was formerly Anderson Professor of English Literature at Cornell and then Professor of English at the University of Oxford. One of his specialties was WWI poetry.) INTRODUCTION : Jon Stallworthy IMPRINT : Carcanet Press PLACE : Manchester, England DATE : (1987) EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 121 pages; 5 3/8" x 8 3/8"; black cloth-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering on spine; photo-pictorial dust-jacket. CONDITION -- BOOK : VERY GOOD -- JACKET : GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean, solid and presentable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR : Barely perceptible wear - gilt lettering is bright, and corners are crisp. Text-block edge is clean. BINDING : Solid - no leaves are detached or loose. There is a slight yawn to the fore-edges of the boards (Nothing a good press will not fix.) INTERIOR : The interior is clean with no underlining, no writing and no marginalia. The reader will note that, on some of the leaves, the printed text shows through to the reverse side of the paper somewhat. This is intermittent (not on every leaf) and probably is shared by all copies of the same printing (the First). DUST-JACKET : The spine panel and the front panel (along the top and along the spine panel) are faded. There is a bit of crimping to the top edge of the jacket. The front and rear panel display a bit of rub, and some small indentations (none of which are egregious). Along the top edges is a damp stain with tide-line, spreading from the front panel, across the spine panel, and onto the rear panel ( It displays weakly on the public side of the jacket, but is quite visible on the reverse side , and, as you can see, it spreads downward for about an inch. (We've shown pictures to illustrate this. It does not impinge on the book's cloth cover, and does not show up on the interior).
