Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows the story of Petra, a willful, curious young girl growing up in a small town in 19th century Norway. As a child, she befriends and is taken under the wing of the well-respected author and pastorâs son, Hans Odegaard, who recognizes her intelligence and rebellious nature. As Petra grows into adulthood with Hans as her teacher, she develops an insatiable hunger for learning and an interest in a life beyond her limited upbringing. The author explores themes of class structure within a small community and the individuality of women within the confines of tradition. The nuanced examination of Petraâs growth and the sacrifices she makes to embrace her intellect make this book a timely and compelling story even for todayâs readers.
