Pidgeon, Omemee, by Leslie Victor Smith, dated 1946. First Edition. In 1756 MacLean was commissioned lieutenant in the Royal Americans (62nd, later 60th Foot) and served in North America until 1761. He was wounded at Fort Carillon in 1758 and Fort Niagara in 1759. In the latter siege he commanded an independent company of New York provincial troops. Later that year he joined James Wolfe's force before Quebec. In 1775 he was empowered to raise a corps of two battalions from disbanded Highland soldiers living in Canada, New York, Nova Scotia, and St. John's Island (PEI), the Royal Highland Emigrants (84th Regiment of Foot), which he commanded as lieutenant-colonel. He played a major role in the defence of Canada during the American invasion of 1775. He was responsible for the military arrangements which led to the defeat of the Americans on Dec. 31, 1775, and the death of their commander, Richard Montgomery. In 1776 he was appointed adjutant general of the army in North America, and in 1777 was promoted brigadier-general and made military governor Montreal. Appended are a MacLean bibliography and a subscribers list that includes many Canadians and Americans.

Einrissen.
