Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the life and career of the German painter Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869), a devout Christian whose work centered on religious themes. Overbeck was a leading figure in the Nazarene movement, a group of artists who sought to revive the artistic styles and techniques of the early Italian Renaissance. Influenced by the social and artistic upheavals of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, the Nazarenes rejected the prevailing Neoclassicism of their time in favor of a more spiritual and emotionally expressive art. Overbeck's paintings, characterized by their meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and deeply felt religious sentiment, played a significant role in shaping the course of 19th-century Christian art.
