Albert Schäfer-Ast was a German etcher, illustrator and cartoonist, whose pictures are known for their quirky sensibility. The etchings are delightful and one will laugh at his curiously invented animals, which range from the bizarre to the cutely ingenious. Many… are quite recognizable, and the viewer shares in each individual animal's iconic reality, as with the wonderful cat on the dust-jacket with its trophy mouse. Schäfer-Ast (1890 - 1951) seems not to be that well known outside Germany, which is a shame, for his art has a sensitive quality imbued by the genius of his humor. The book has an explanatory afterword by Anne Gabrisch. The original etchings were made available by Schaefer - Ast's estate, and lithographically reproduced by H. F. Jutte. The book was issued as part of the famous Insel - Bücherei series. SERIES : Insel - Bücherei (No. 691). TITLE : Schäfer - Ast : Fabuleux. ARTIST (ETCHINGS) : Albert Schäfer - Ast (1890 - 1951).
