Seine Sammlung umfasste neben vielen anderen bibliophilen Kostbarkeiten auch zwei Exemplare der Gutenberg- oder Mazarine-Bibel (Los 436, ein Exemplar auf Pergament gedruckt), eine Biblia-Pauperum (Los 419) und die frühesten Ausgaben der ersten englischen Schriftsteller. Als die Familie zunehmend unter finanziellem Druck geriet, bot sie an, die Bibliothek einschließlich der Sammlung von illuminierten Manuskripten in den 1890er Jahren für 160.000 Pfund an die Nation zu verkaufen. Der Deal wurde nicht abgeschlossen, und die Bücher wurden in den nächsten Jahren stückweise für insgesamt 228.000 Pfund verkauft.
