Signed and dated (Dec 1980) by Rivers on the ffep. Faint adhesive stain (about 3") along front joint; very light soiling at bottom corner of text block (not infringing into textblock). Dust jacket rubbed, with a few small scuff marks here and there; lightly wrinkled along the edges. Internally bright and clean, an excellent copy.

Brings together for the first time all of the poems that had so far been discovered - more than five hundred - which O'Hara wrote in his lifetime. This copy has the 1st issue jacket, by Larry Rivers, which was deemed unsuitable by members of O'Hara's family and was quickly replaced by a typographic design, and it has the 1st issue binding; subsequently, the covers were stamped blind. Early copies such as this one were sent to reviewers and comprised the first shipments on advance orders. Very Good indeed with just moderate signs of handling, a handful of leaves with tiny corner bumps, and the fore edge with a spot at the end matter, the jacket a little rubbed to the head edge, where the spine is bumped and shows on the reverse a faint patch of soiling, slightly faded around the spine, and with a couple of short, mild scratches to the lower panel, but nonetheless Very Good overall.

Unbound. Condition: Fine. First edition (unsigned issue). Single sheet measuring 10 7/8 by 12 7/16 inches, printed on recto only. Illustrated. Photolithographically reproduces in color on laid paper a portrait of John Ashbery by Larry Rivers. Left and right blank margin lightly creased, with two tiny edge tears, else a near fine copy. Published in an edition of 150 numbered copies and 30 "hors commerce" copies, all of which were to be signed by John Ashbery and Larry Rivers; this is an out-of-series issue, and is NOT numbered and NOT signed]. Ashbery is seated at a typewriter, composing a poem with the printed text of the poem, entitled "Pyrography" reproduced in the top margin background, as if in a dreamscape.
