This study takes an interdisciplinary approach, looking for explanations of susto in the interaction of social, physiological, and psychological factors.

The more credulous hold that only people of Mexican background are afflicted and that the illnesses can only be understood or treated in traditional ways, not by technically trained physicians. These attitudes and those toward sorcery are explained by anxiety about adoption of Anglo-American values. 3 of these illnesses "function to sustain some of the dominant values of the Mexican-American culture." It is a working assumption of this paper that, in general, folk-illness phenomena are indeed amenable to such investigation if one is aware of especial methodological problems which are concomitants of such research. A presentation of some of these general problems is followed by an examination of the Hispanic-American folk illness which I refer to as susto.
