Facsimile of a classic children's nursery rhyme book, originally published by George Routledge, London, in 1872. A collection of 1 or 2-page nursery rhymes, each headed by a drawing. Very good A pleasing Scottish association copy of the charming, and expanded, second edition of Christina Rossetti's collection of nursery rhymes, beautifully illustrated by Arthur Hughes, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel, and from the library of the Glaswegian bookseller and publisher James J. MacLehose, featuring his striking ex libris by fellow Scot, the artist and etcher Sir David Young Cameron. Rossetti's collection was first published in 1872; she just lived to see this new edition, dying the following year, 1894. The MacLehose firm was associated with the University of Glasgow, as its printers and publishers, for over one hundred years and was known for its "typographically elegant work". From the second generation, James J. MacLehose eventually took over both businesses run by his father James MacLehose (1811-1885) and uncle Robert MacLehouse (fl. 1872-1910), in collaboration with his brother, Robert. Known for his townscapes (as here) and landscapes, Sir David Young Cameron RA (18651945) was a Scottish painter and etcher connected with the Etching Revival.…

Bound in publisher's emerald green cloth elaborately stamped in black and gilt, all edges gilt, brown coated endpapers. Very Good with lean to spine, light wear to covers with more pronounced rubbing to spine. Hinges repaired with glue, crease and edgewear to front free endpaper, evidence of bookseller ticket removal to back pastedown. Contents lightly toned and thumbed with occasional foxing, overopened throughout. Upper 1/4 inch of half-title cut away, pencil notation to p. 73, short tear to pp. 209/210. The first edition of George MacDonald's first collection of original fairy tales, comprising the following stories: "The Light Princess," "The Giant's Heart," "The Shadows," "Cross Purposes," and "The Golden Key." The first and last of these tales are among his most famous. MacDonald published the book as juvenile fiction and dedicated it to his own children, but the stories were really written for adults. He wanted to use romance and symbolism to convey spiritual truth - he had trained as a preacher - and he wrote in his important 1893 treatise The Fantastic Imagination that adults could read meaning in fairy stories that escaped children. It was a belief he shared with his close friend Lewis Carroll, who published Alice's Adventures Underground on the advice of MacDonald and his wife. The Scotsman's foray into what C.S. Lewis would later call "lies breathed through silver" resulted in two of the most enduring children's novels of the nineteenth century, The Princess and the Goblin and At the Back of the North Wind.…
