Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the effects of schoolwork on young eyes through repeated examinations of students over a nine-year period at a German gymnasium. Prior to moving into a purpose-built school with improved conditions, the author found that 31% of high school students entering the schoo…l were myopic, and that this had increased to 58% by graduation. After the move, the proportion of myopic students entering high school fell to 18%, rising to only 34% on graduation. He found that most cases of myopia were relatively mild, with less than 1% of students at the new school progressing to severe myopia, and that this was not associated with loss of visual acuity. The author concludes that the design of schools and diligent application of well-established principles of school hygiene can prevent the onset of myopia in students. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
