Reliure du début du XX? siècle en demi-percaline marron à coins, dos lisse avec pièce de titre en long de chagrin brun chocolat, plats de papier à la cuve encadrés de filets à froid, gardes et contreplats de papier bleu, tranches mouchetées. Quelques petites piqûres sans gravité. Né en 1827 à Anse-Bertrand, en Guadeloupe, Armand Budan appartient à cette génération d'artistes qui accompagnèrent le renouvellement de la représentation des Antilles françaises au milieu du XIX? siècle. Peintre, auteur notamment de décors monumentaux pour plusieurs édifices publics, il compte également parmi les premiers photographes actifs dans l'archipel. Peu avant son départ pour Paris, il ouvre, en novembre 1862, une souscription destinée à financer la publication de cet album, diffusé en douze livraisons et acheminé en Guadeloupe à la fin de l'année 1863. L'ouvrage rassemble onze vues parmi les plus représentatives de l'île, depuis les paysages volcaniques, les rivières et les cascades de Basse-Terre jusqu'aux bourgs de Grande-Terre, avant de s'achever par une vaste vue panoramique du port de Pointe-à-Pitre. Cette ville occupait une place particulière dans la carrière de Budan, qui y avait réalisé quelques années auparavant les décors du théâtre municipal ainsi que des peintures murales de l'église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, reconstruite après le séisme de 1843. Installé ensuite à Paris, il expose régulièrement au Salon entre 1863 et 1867 avant de mourir à Saint-Pierre, en Martinique, en 1874. Collation: 3 unnumbered leaves comprising the title, preface and half-title Karukera, pp. [3]-44, one blank leaf, the lithographic title-frontispiece and eleven lithographic plates. Early twentieth-century half brown buckram over marbled paper boards, smooth spine with long dark brown morocco lettering-piece, boards ruled in blind, blue endpapers, sprinkled edges. A few minor spots of foxing. Born at Anse-Bertrand, Guadeloupe, in 1827, Armand Budan belonged to the generation of artists who transformed the visual representation of the French Caribbean during the mid-nineteenth century. A painter responsible for decorative schemes in several public buildings, he also ranks among the earliest photographers active in the French West Indies. Shortly before leaving for Paris, he launched a subscription in November 1862 to finance the publication of this ambitious work, which appeared in twelve parts and reached Guadeloupe towards the end of 1863. An important work, with eleven fine plates of Guadeloupe scenes, and with text that covers all aspects of life in Guadeloupe. Views include picturesque sights in the countryside, scenes in the main towns (Moule and l'Anse Bertrand), and a large panoramic view of the town and harbor of Pointe-à-Pietre. Budan was born in Guadeloupe in 1827 and became an accomplished painter of portraits, historical and religious subjects, flowers, and murals. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1863 to 1867 and was responsible for the mural decoration of the chapel of St. Joseph in the cathedral at Pointe-à-Pietre. A rare series of views, and most unusual for being from this period, when the decline in the sugar industry had decreased the number of patrons available for such expensive works. SABIN 8949. Folio. [A Arnaud] Born on Guadeloupe in 1827 Budan was well known as both a painter and as one of the first photographers in the Antilles, exhibiting at the Paris salons in 1863 and 1867. In November 1862 he launched a subscription for La Guadeloupe Pittoresque which was to be published in 12 livraisons (4 francs per part or 48 francs complete). The subscribers could, if they wished, have the album bound with their initials stamped in gilt on the upper board. The finished items arrived in Guadeloupe in December 1863 and were put on sale at the beginning of 1864 at the price of 50 francs for a bound copy. He died in Saint-Pierre on Martinique in 1874.…
