Edition : First Edition. , Contemporary full crimson calf. Signature of Sultan as gilt centerpiece on the top board. Gilt border and blind rules on boards. Spine with six compartments. Green Morocco labels on 2 and 4. Pasted and free marbled endpapers. , Eight pages of text in Turkish Arabic. Title in French and Turkish. This is the first edition in Turkish Arabic of this beautiful work and, therefore, it is incredibly unique and scarce. The more common versions of this work are with French text only. Its 16 colour lithographs, drawn on stone by M. Julien, include 80 costumes of officials, ministers and military officers of the Ottoman Empire. Despite pages claiming that this book is volume 1, another volume was never published in any language, therefore the book is complete within itself. Mushir Arif Pasha carried out several military missions for the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Abdülmecid I, in places such as Greece and in Syria. He gained so much status that in 1861 he was appointed governor of the province of Silistra, Bulgaria., Size : Folio (545 x 385mm)., Illustrated with engraved title page, a frontis-portrait of the author and 16 full page colour plates., References : Atabey 30; Colas 148; Lipperheide 1440m. A very scarce edition of this rare book. The text is in Turkish Arabic, rather than French, although, the plates have captions both in French and Turkish. A handsome, fine example of this superb work. All text and plates are clean and crisp.
