From lower cover: Day in, day out, Robert Ariail's cartoons enliven and illuminate the editorial pages of The State with graphic perception and wicked wit. Whether he's drawing a bead on local politicians or training his sights on presidents and politicos afar, his cartoons command attention because his pen is lethal and his aim unerring. These abilities have produced a large following within South Carolina and without, evidenced by his national and regional awards including The Society of Professional Journalists Green Eyeshade Award for best cartoon; The National Headliner Award for consistently outstanding editorial cartoons; and two awards in The Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition, which annually selects the ten best cartoonists in the nation. Ariail is a Columbia native and a Distinguished Alumnus of The University of South Carolina. In 1990, Ariail published his first collection of cartoons, Ariail View, which was an instant success selling nearly 5000 copies in three months and remaining Columbia's best seller for many weeks. In his introduction to Ariail Attack, Alex Sanders, Chief Judge of South Carolina's Court of Appeals, says the most threating inkmonger of them all -- particularly if the politician happens to be self-serving, self-important or otherwise overstuffed -- is the political cartoonist.
