II y a à cela plusieurs rais…ons. Ses croyances religieuses, par exemple, qui en font une sorte de mystique, et d'ailleurs perçu comme tel par les autres rallymen, son honnêteté presque maladive et sa loyauté, qualités corollaires de sa foi. Sur le plan purement sportif, Vatanen a également ses particularités. Sa carrière a été marquée par ses très grandes qualités d'attaquant et son immense talent, mais également par une noire malchance. A-t-il lui-même provoqué cette malchance ? On peut le penser : il était l'un des pilotes psychologiquement les plus fragiles de la fin des années 70. C'est ce qui rend son personnage attachant. Enfin, il faut rappeler qu'il a été victime d'un très grave accident, au rallye d'Argentine 85. Durant son transfert à l'hôpital, il fut victime de deux arrêts cardiaques. S'ensuivit une très longue convalescence, sans doute sa course la plus difficile. Vatanen n'est donc pas un pilote comme les autres ; de même, son livre n'est pas le récit détaillé d'une carrière, comme on le voit trop souvent, mais celui d'un combat de l'homme contre les éléments, contre la mort, et contre la malchance. Se produira une sorte de résurrection et Vatanen gagnera Paris-Dakar, officiellement en 1987, et moralement en 1988". Pas courant.
