It takes place at a time when Brazil had just stepped fully into becoming a Republic and had officially separated religion from state but, nevertheless, still dealt with persecution caused by religious interference. This book examines how such persecution had been seen and dealt with throughout history in Brazil, focusing particularly on violent and forced conversions of native Brazilians by Jesuit missionaries in the 16th Century, and the influence those centuries-old persecutions continue to exert in the present day. The author draws a parallel with earlier episodes of religious persecution, especially at the hands of Catholic orders throughout the early modern period in Europe, in order to shed light on Brazil's own complex relationship with religious and political power, and the way it informs the present-day Brazilian identity.
