Elle provient de l'ancienne collection Robert Schuman (n°150). "Après le crime de manque…r à l'amitié, le plus grand sans doute est de douter d'elle. Examinez-vous d'après ce principe, mon cher Faverney, et voyez si vous n'avez rien à vous reprocher. Quant à moi, non seulement je vous ai écrit deux fois à Bâle, mais je vous ai suivi de l'oeil assez longtems ; j'ai sçu votre courageuse tournée en France, et que de tous vos biens il ne vous restait plus que les corses ; ce calembour est de Manette [sa maîtresse, qui l'a suivi en émigration] qui se fortifie, comme vous voyez. L'abbé Hérald, aumônier de votre légion, doit vous avoir donné de mes nouvelles ; c'est un homme qui permet trop souvent à son estomac de troubler sa cervelle, mais il a des momens lucides. Me voilà à Hambourg, dans une maison de campagne, où j'ai rassemblé 3 émigrés, sans compter mon frère et mon fils, et j'attens Pascal et d'Uzer : vous manquerez à cette petite colonie ; les Capadoce [Cappadoce Péreira] sont à deux pas, et nous avons des livres. Je mène de front le Corps politique et le Dictionnaire de la langue française ; cette dernière entreprise est pour pousser l'autre. On assure qu'elle sera lucrative, autant que le permet le malheur des tems. Madame de Flahaut est ici avec son fils, et nous avons des nouvelles du malencontreux duc de Choiseul ; tout malaventuroso qu'il est, le voilà sauvé. Il poursuit : "On parlait tout à l'heure ici de la mort du Roi. Elle a dit qu'elle ne concevait pas pourquoi on admirait tant le mot du confesseur qui du pié de l'échafaud lui criait Montez donc St Louis ; plus on riait, plus elle s'obstinait à dire que ce confesseur avait parlé au Roi comme à un laquais, montez donc St Louis, comme montez donc St Jean, et elle y mettait le ton [.]". M. Capadoce qui est là et qui vous fait mille complimens, veut que je vous transcrive le petit tableau que nous nous sommes permis de faire du pays que nous habitons : c'est un bout d'une épitre en vers aisés à une jolie femme qui ne l'est pas : (mad. de Fougy)". Suite un poème de 55 vers. "En voilà assez en rimes redoublées : une autre fois vous aurez la Réponse des serpens à Madame de Genlis ; car il faut que vous sachiez que cette illustre Dame, qui est ma voisine, a adressé des vers à une couleuvre dont elle envie les talens, etc. Il faut avoir lu cette épitre pleine de tendresse pour pouvoir croire en l'existence de cette étrange pièce. Adieu donc : mille choses à M. de Galli. Amusez-vous bien dans votre île, ancien exil du bon Sénèque dont je vous souhaite la patience. Faites comme le joueur, lisez le et avec moins de distraction". Il est joint un reçu autographe signé de son épouse, Louise Mather-Flint comtesse de Rivarol (1750-1821). 15 pluviôse an 4 (février 1796).
