A posthumous selection of poems by Richard Lawson Gales (18621927), the Anglican clergyman, essayist and poet whose verse was admired for its medievalising ballad form and devotional tone. Introduced by Anthony C. Deane. Poems include "David in Heaven," "A Ballad of Dick Whittington," "A Ballad of Saint Christopher," "The Light of the World," and "Why Restless, My Soul?," among others. A presentation copy, inscribed by a member of the Gales family: "To Fr. Hope-Patten with all good wishes from L. E. Gales. Christmas 1934." Hope-Patten was founder of the modern shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, one of the most influential Anglo-Catholic figures of the 20th century, with his bookplate to front paste down.
