36x22 cm. Uncolored portrait in fair to good condition, backed with early linen, frayed at edges with holes around the edges from being mounted for framing. Part of left margin removed, not affecting printed surface. Engraved by Jacobus Houbraken. Published by John & Paul Knapton. The portrait is in an oval frame in the top half of the print, with a child below next to a sword and crown. The portrait was taken from the collecitno of the Hon. John Spencer. Russell was a soldier and privy counsellor who changed sides twice during the Civil War yet survived to be awarded a dukedom by William and Mary and live to age 84. NPG D42892.

Radierung. 24, 7 x 17, 5 cm (Plattengr.). Auf Trägerpapier montiert. Mit ca. 0,5 cm breitem Rand. Radierung von Paulus Pontius (1603-1658) nach einem Gemnälde von Anthonis van Dyck (1599-1641). Dargestellt ist Johann VIII. von Nassau-Siegen (1583-1638). Zustand mit folgender Signatur am unteren Plattenrand: "Paul. Pontius sculpsit Ant. van Dyck pinxit cum privilegio". Das Gemälde von van Dyck befindet sich heute in der Sammlung Liechtenstein, ein weiteres Gemälde der Werkstatt van Dycks befindet sich in der Staatsgalerie Neuburg/Donau. Gewicht in Gramm: 500.

The young Charles II Etched portrait, trimmed to plate mark. In the 1630s Sir Anthony van Dyck executed a series of painted portraits, which were made into engraved prints for his 'Icones Principium Vivorum', a work which remained incomplete at his death in 1641, but which was subsequently finished and published in 1645. Johannes Meyssens used it as the basis for his 'Image de divers hommes', to which Wenceslaus Hollar contributed a large fraction of the 74 new portraits included in the first edition of 1649. These included a portrait of the young Charles II after van Dyck, who had been appointed court painter by his subject's father in 1632. With Charles I beheaded in the January of 1649, this print was published with Charles II as king de jure, as shown by the caption declaring him 'Magna Brittania Fra et Hibernia Rex'. He is shown in three-quarter length wearing a coat, lace collar and sash over his left shoulder. In his left hand he holds his hat and in the right a staff. The Banqueting Hall is visible through the window behind him, seen across St James' Park. NHG Hollar 1064 II; Pennington 1442ii; RCIN 602331.
