Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. Reprint. London: George Bell & Sons, 1888. Published anonymously, this series of sketches are the work of William Clarke (1800-1838), and was originally published in 1830. It was reprinted many times; Quercus has identified at least six other editions - this particular one is the…hard copy held by the LOC. Surprisingly uncommon, despite its historical popularity. This is a Very Good Plus copy. Bright green cloth binding with titles in gilt. The front cover is heavily blindstamped with a circular medallion for "Bohn's Libraries;" on the spine it is ralso designated as an "Illustrated Library." There are fifty illustrations by the famed George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Clean text; 432 pages, plus a 24-page publisher's catalog in the rear. (The catalog is dated 1892). Very little wear; very mild bumps and a few spots of discoloration on the rear cover. There is a previous-owner stamp on the Title Page, and the FFEP has a small discard stamp (other than this, there are no typical library treatments).A very attractive book, with the text bright and supple; still readable today. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
