Mit einer Einleitung von Michel Leiris - Aus der Leinwand keinen ab…geschlossenen Raum zu machen, den der Rahmen eingrenzt, die Formen nicht aufhalten, sie vielmehr frei atmen und sich vermehren lassen, sie zusammenfügen, das betrifft ebenso ihre strukturellen Verbindungen wie ihre Bedeutungszusammenhänge - eher wie man Pflanzen aufpfropft als auf dem mechanischen Wege der Collage (wie André Masson es bei einem Gespräch über seine Auffassung von den "Pfaden des Schaffens" formulierte): dieses Vorgehen entspricht ebenso sehr seinem Hang zum Fest -Augenblick explosiver Fülle - wie dem Wunsch nach Spontaneität, die ihn andererseits - noch bevor er sich dem Surrealismus anschließt - dazu führt, soweit es jemandem möglich ist, der etwas zu Vermittelndes schaffen will, den Automatismus zu praktizieren von dem eine große Anzahl seiner Zeichnungen und Sandbilder auf immer mitreißendere Weise, wenn auch mit verschiedenartigen Absichten, sichtbar Zeugnis ablegen. Was André Masson eigen zu sein scheint und ihn von den Normen trennt, die man gängigerweise für die der surrealistischen Künstler hält, (die zumindest in ihrer Blütezeit ästhetische Werte völlig ablehnten), zeigt sich darin, dass er der Malerei vornehmlich dichterische Ziele zuweist. Er gibt sich ihr hin, wie er sich dem "bei canto" hingeben würde : die ganze Skala malerischer Mittel meisterhaft zu beherrschen, verdankt er nicht nur seiner persönlichen Begabung, sondern auch seiner ungeheuren malerischen Kultur. Dies scheint für ihn die Voraussetzung zu sein, als ob das Bild - bevor es sich in ein Fest verwandelt, an dem sich der Geist berauschen könnte "das Fest fürs Auge" sein müsse, von dem Delacroix sprach, so etwas wie ein optisches Gegenstück dessen, was für den Laien der "bei canto" ist.
