Draft script for the 1978 play. Copy belonging to actress Tresa Hughes, with her substantive annotations throughout. Shay is in the late years of parenthood, making no progress with being an adult. Saddled with a husband, son, and daughter, she is unable to graduate to the responsibilities before her. To fend off the onslaught of reality, she stays in a stressed, performative state, compulsively telling jokes and introducing distraction. Hughes was nominated for a Tony award for Best Actress for her role in the 1961 production of "The Devil's Advocate." This draft was used in pre-production and production in the Off-Broadway premiere of "Shay" at Playwrights Horizon in 1978. It starred Marge Redmond, and was well reviewed by the New York Times. Hughes' annotations mention Michael Lesario (costumes) and actor Dallas Greer, both noted in the review. Green Studio Duplicating Service studio wrappers, with a credit for playwright Commire. Title page present, noting a copyright date of 1974 and with a manuscript annotation noting copy No. 4. Credits also present on the title page for the Producing Managers Company and Esther Sherman of the William Morris Agency, both in New York. 116 leaves, mimeograph duplication. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good or better, bound with two gold screw brads.
