Andy Rocchelli iniziò a viaggiare in Russia nel 2010, dove trascorse una notevole quantità di tempo lavorando come fotografo freelance e coprendo storie in luoghi diversi. Russian Interiors è nato da un lavoro secondario che aveva permesso ad Andy di coprire le sue spese durante il soggiorno a Mosca, sfidando i fotografi locali e offrendo ritratti a basso costo a donne single nei loro appartamenti.Rapidamente, questo espediente era sbocciato in un ampio corpus di lavoro, con un archivio che includeva ritratti scattati per i suoi clienti e foto che aveva tenuto per sé. Il nucleo di questo lavoro è, ovviamente, più profondo del suo scopo commerciale iniziale: questo metodo è divenuto un modper accedere a spazi e storie private, per comprendere meglio il lato intimo delle donne russe.Il 24 maggio 2014, Rocchelli, socio fondatore del gruppo Cesura, viene ucciso da un colpo di mortaio a Sloviansk, Ucraina. Il volume, finanziato con una campagna su Kickstarter, era ancora in corso di stampa e fu portato a termine dal collettivo.
