He won four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards (the oprecursor to the Tonys), an Oscar, and an Emmy. He, however, shocked and betrayed many he loved and worked with by naming names to McCarthy's HUAC. Sondheim called him "the olny genius I've ever met" but others thought him inarticulate, seeming to deal primarily in the realm of the kinetic and visual.
