First Edition
Staplebound. Condition: Very good +. First Edition. Five staplebound periodicals, each about 24pp., folded horizontally. Printed on cheap paper, but still in very good or better condition, with only a few mild chips at some of the folds and edges, with no notable loss. A very uncommon full run of this short-lived journal of cultural criticism focused on classical, orchestral, operatic, and chamber music. The Editors note in the first issue that there is an almost oversaturation of writing on the New York Philharmonic and similar major organizations, while smaller venues such as the New School of Social Research were getting hardly any critical coverage. "Listen" was an attempt to remedy this situation. Contributors included Sergei Prokofieff, Edward Jablonski, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, and dozens of others. Despite a scattering of institutional holdings, the magazine is scarce in commerce; we found none in the market as of this listing, and none in recent auction records.
