Published by [Lacks imprint/copyright leaf but might be] New York: Huntington and Savage, 1832., 1832
Seller: David Hallinan, Bookseller, Columbus, MS, U.S.A.
Poor condition as book is missing initial leaves with at least the front free endpaper, front flyleaf, and title leaf lacking; first page present is dedication page. Thus present pagination is iii-xii, 13-440. Hardcover; H 19cm x L 11.75cm. Original full leather binding; boards well rubbed and scuffed with slight warping towards worn edges, board corners bumped, strong scuffing lengthwise along front and rear joints with surface peeling and tear to top 4cm of spine where leather has curled back leaving top quires exposed, lesser scuffing at spine heel, spine's red morocco title label mostly intact with shallow loss along rear joint edge but with gilt title lettering still reasonably bright but not vibrant, dull horizontal gilt bars across spine too. Mild to moderate toning and foxing to interior leaves; light moisture staining evident to some rear leaves; a few page corners creased as well. Includes Preface (pages iv-v) and Preface to the Third Edition (pages vi-vii); b/w illustrations decorate the text comprised of the author's 48 Lectures which conclude with notes regarding botanical districts, genera of plants, species of plants, vocabulary, language of flowers, alphabetical index, and common names of plants. Laid-in is are a small cloth swatch along with numerous newspaper clippings mostly circa 1870s evidently from the Pickens County Weekly Register of Carrollton, Alabama (between Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Columbus, Mississippi). First published in 1829, Almira Hart Lincoln's FAMILIAR LECTURES ON BOTANY, aka "Lectures on Botany," quickly became a standard 19th century American textbook and enjoyed numerous editions throughout the 1830s and 1840s. However, per OCLC library citations, pagination seems to have varied greatly among editions. As already mentioned this copy lacks its initial leaves inclusive to page ii but the book's pagination corresponds to an 1832 New York imprint published by Huntington and Savage as cited by Harvard University's online library catalog and, upon an extensive review of online library records, the 1832 Huntington-Savage imprint appears to be the only edition so paged. The full title of the 1832 edition as cited by Harvard's catalog is FAMILIAR LECTURES ON BOTANY, PRACTICAL, ELEMENTARY, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL, WITH A NEW AN FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANTS OF THE UNITED STATES, AND CULTIVATED EXOTICS, &C BY MRS. ALMIRA H. LINCOLN NOW MRS. LINCOLN PHELPS. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.
