Not only on account of the content of her works, but also thanks to the diversity of her artistic approach, ranging as it does across many… media - public art, embroidery, weaving, sculpture, drawing, and writing: all are grist for her poetics. The book is published to coincide with the exhibition at the MAXXI Museum in Rome, which is presenting to the general public over one hundred works by the Sardinian artist, from the early 1960s to her very last works, and explores the various themes dear to the artist with the contributions of experts in their fields: the locations, the creation, and publication of art books, her public art events and her relationship with the written word and her own writing. Her entire oeuvre is distinguished by its powerful visual impact, revealing a 'way of doing art' that is nothing other than an instrument of thought. She was head of the Art, Architecture, and Town Planning section at the Olivetti Foundation. Antonella Anedda trained as an art historian and has worked in the field of literature and translation. She writes essays and poetry. Franco Farinelli is a geographer and has taught in some of the world's most illustrious universities: Geneva University; UCLA - University of California, Los Angeles; UCB - University of California, Berkeley; and at the Sorbonne in Paris. He is Professor of Geography at Bologna University and has been president of Associazione Geografi italiani (Society of Italian Geographers). Davide Mariani is an art historian and director of the Stazione dell'Arte in Ulassai (Nuoro). Elena Pontiggia is an art historian with a particular interest in Italian and international art between the wars. Il riso, e lo stesso vale per il genere comico, è un oggetto osservato con una certa diffidenza all'interno della nostra storia culturale, spesso relegato ai margini della cultura autentica, se non apertamente biasimato e condannato. Platone, gli Stoici, i Padri della Chiesa sono unanimi nell'indicare nel riso, soprattutto se smodato, ma non solo, un comportamento che deve essere evitato da coloro che assolvono il compito di guidare e indirizzare, anche nello stile di vita, le comunità. E invece, ridere, scoppiare a ridere, morire dal ridere è un gesto che rinnova il nostro sguardo sulle cose, la nostra capacità di pensare il mondo e noi stessi. «Il riso è una sospensione, lascia in sospeso colui che ride. [.] Non afferma niente, non tranquillizza niente». A essere sospesa, seguendo l'indicazione di Bataille, è la nostra altrimenti immediata adesione alla macchina del mondo, alla sua apparenza di stabilità e fondamento, di solidità. Sospesa è la cieca confidenza nella stabilità, rassicurante e opprimente, dell'io. Le giravolte e le cadute di Charlot, le incongruenze che si spalancano di fronte al suo sguardo, lungo il suo buffo peregrinare nel mondo ci fanno ridere, forse, perché ci svelano che la trama del reale non è mai riducibile definitivamente alle concatenazioni di nessi logici e causali, di volta in volta differenti, in cui pensiamo di averla definitivamente intrappolata - così come l'io non è mai condannato a una definitiva, sterile, ossessiva ripetizione di sé. Morendo dal ridere, lasciamo morire ogni identità costrittiva, statica, dell'io e delle cose, e torniamo per un istante ad aprirci alla possibilità di pensare diversamente il mondo, di diventare altro da quello che siamo. L'epifania del fondo instabile delle cose e di noi stessi, la rivelazione dolorosa della fragilità, della infondatezza delle nostre aspettative e certezze, grazie al riso, può sottrarsi al rischio di tradursi in mero rancore e risentimento; si fa invece liberazione, apertura, premessa alla costruzione di pensare e agire inediti.
