Overall good copy of this scarce title. Excellent read. A good book to enjoy and keep on hand. Or would make a great gift for the fan / reader in y…our life. Archival reprint. Some edgewear, normal for age. From the foreword: . Report of the survey represents the culmination of two years of concerted efforts on the part of hundreds of organizations and individuals. The survey, to the best of our knowledge, is the first of its kind ever undertaken by a large metropolitan area and provides a comprehensive and detailed inventory of needs and resources. Its findings and recommendations are based on an analysis of the data by a broadly representative group of professional and lay leaders. It constitutes a master plan for the development and coordination of an efficient and effective network of community services to the mentally retarded in our County. The Survey was envisioned as the first essential step in the creation of a continuing mechanism for coordination in the planning and developing comunity services to the mentally retarded. As is noted in the introduction to the report, the ultimate objective of the Joint Agencies Project is to establish under the Joint Powers Act of California--a Mental Retardation Services Board--a mechanism unique in the field of mental retardation. Even as this publication goes to press, there is marked evidence that this objective is being successfully realized. A project of this nature, scope, and uniqueness--which has elicited national as well as international attention--inevitable is the product of efforts of so many organizations and individuals that they can only be mentioned in the text of the report and enumerated in its appendix. Some special acknowledgements, however, are in order. The Welfare Planning Council's Mental Health Development Commission, itself funded by a grant from the National insititute of Mental Health, initiated the project and provided it with general supervision. The State Department of Mental Hygiene made available National Mental Health Act funds to conduct the project, and the Department's staff provided invaluable consel during the course of the project. The State Study Commmission provided cooperation at the State level and direct contact with the legislature. The Mental Retardation Committee, under the able chairmanship of Dr. Leo Cain, carried the responsibility for the design and implementation of the Survey; this Committee also is continuing to render valuable assistance to the Board of the Welfare Planning Council in establishing the Mental Retardation Services Board. Finally, special tribute should by paid to the outstanding leadership and direction from the project staff and particularly, its Director, Dr. Ivy Mooring. James e. Ludlam, President Welfare Planning Council, Los Angeles Region [California]. Preface: The findings in the Mental Retardation Survey are based on the information from the 334 public and private agencies which serve the retardedd population of Los Angeles County. The information could not have been gathered without the cooperation and of the agency heads and their staff members, many of whom spent long hours answering questions about their programs. The recommendations contained in the report are the outgrowth of sub committee meetings in the mjor areas covered by the Survey. The Survey provides the factual data for the development of a master plan of services to the Mentally retarded of Los Angeles County. The implemention of the program will be the responsibility of the Mental Retardation Services Board which will consist of the signators to a Joint Powers Agreement. To all the agenc heads and their staff members who made it possible to gather the data, to the sub committee chairmen and their members who helped to develop the recommendations, to the project and steering committee members who provided the project with gu. Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition of this comprehensive anthology that compiles historical documents, speeches, and firsthand accounts to trace the evolving struggle for African American freedom and equality. Quarto, original publisher's orange cloth boards, with black and white illustrations. Association copy, inscribed by Martin Luther King Jr. t…o Sammy Davis Jr. on the front free endpaper, "To my Dear Friend Sammy Davis Whose Friendship I Cherish very deeply MartinÂLutherÂKing." Sammy Davis Jr. (1925â"1990) was an American singer, dancer, and actor whose extraordinary versatility made him one of the most celebrated entertainers of the twentieth century. As the only Black member of the Rat Pack, Davis broke racial barriers in entertainment while confronting segregation both on and off stage. His friendship with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. began through Davisâs activism and fundraising for Kingâs civil-rights efforts and deepened during the Civil Rights Movement. Davis used his fame to raise awareness and funds for Kingâs initiatives, performing at civil rights benefits and supporting the 1963 March on Washington. In near fine condition with a small loss to the crown of the spine. Edited by Alfred E. Cain. Illustrated by Horace Varela. Housed in the original orange cloth slipcase within a custom folding chemise within a custom half morocco slipcase with gilt titles to the spine. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama. He also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and the following year he and the SCLC took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In his final years he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a holiday in numerous cities and states beginning in 1971, and as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in 2011.
