Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Minus. Stated Fourteenth Edition. There are two penciled names on the blank second front end paper. One name is Professor Meusel, the other is Marion Bernstein. For the hell of it I googled their names and the first story on the latter was a Wikipedia profile on a poet named Marion Bernstein who lived between the years 1846-1906. The first line of the profile says Marion Bernstein was a radical feminist poet who lived most of her life in Glasgow. Long shot but I figured I'd pass it along. This book is in pretty decent shape, a good deal better than most books published in the 19th century. The covers look really good. There's one tiny spot of rub-through near the front bottom corner, another tiny spot on the rear side of the spine off the top edge. There's a 3/8th inch tear at the juncture between the front and spine, coming up from the bottom edge. The covers are really clean and the gilt lettering on the front and gilt lettering and design on the spine are still quite bright. Also, nice inlaid designs on the front and rear. Very solid feel to the book. And the spine isn't slanted. The interior of the book is quite decently bound. Just a couple of instances where there is a slight space between facing pages with a little bit of webbing showing, but all the bindings actually still intact even in those instances. The pages obviously have some toning, not that much, but they are very clean. I'm sure there must be a few instances of soiling but I'm thus far not finding them. Found one, a speck at the top of the Preface page. Verdict: really clean pages. They are also in quite decent shape. I saw a very tiny tear off the top edge of one page, far from the print. The aforementioned front end paper has a, say, 1/64th of an inch loss at its top corner. There is a vague semi-crease at the top corner of a handful of early pages. I'm otherwise not seeing much by way of creasing in this 332 page book. Funny I would have guessed more like 500 pages. Thick book. Seventy celebrated poets produce a lot of words. I don't see any markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments, no bookplates, NOT ex-library. And with the exception of the two penciled signatures, there is no writing to be found anywhere in the book. So, I only see two actual flaws: there is a tear at the gutter between both of the illustrated inside covers and their end papers. You can see webbing through the space opened up by the tear. A couple of related positives: while the covers have a little give because of this, neither is in any threat of detaching and there are no cracks on the covers) and in both instances all of the paper on both sides of the tear is still present. I've actually covered up the crack in the front. So a repair shouldn't be all that difficult, a little glue, etc. And that's about it. Take a look at the photos.
