Debiutowal literacko w 1831 wowczas tez osiadl w dziedzicznej wsi Solohubowka i poswiecil sie dzialalnosci literackiej, byl autorem poezji, potem opowiadan i powiesci. Byl jednym z poznych tworcow tzw. "szkoly ukrainskiej" polskiego romantyzmu, nawiazywal do folkloru i historii ludu ukrainskiego, publikowal przede wszystkim w czasopismie, jego najbardziej znanym utworem jest "Starosta Kaniowski" z 1836 roku. Po 1848 pisal przede wszystkim realistyczne wspolczesne powiesci obyczajowe. W latach 1838-1842 wydawal noworocznik "Rusalka", potem pismo "Grosz wdowi". Pod koniec lat 50. przeniosl sie do Berdyczowa, gdzie pracowal jako nauczyciel, w latach 1858-1860 mieszkal w Zytomierzu, gdzie byl jednym z organizatorow Stowarzyszenia Ksiegarsko-Wydawniczego wydajac tam m.in. swoje elementarze dla ludu; zob.
