BY introducing a few specimens of the most beautiful and typical rugs in existence, Mr. Albert Achdjian is being very helpful to directors of Art museums, Art collectors and scholars, and to all those who are fond of Oriental rugs, because of their gay colourings, their traditional magnificence, and the variety in their decoration. A careful study of each plate will train the eye to recognize the style of the best-known varieties or categories of rugs which are to be found in houses, museums and shop-windows and which are still made by hand in Eastern countries. With the descriptive notes accompanying each plate, it is even possible to identify local varieties. From an ethnographical comparative viewpoint, there still remain many problems to be solved which are often complex, and the principal elements of which must be outlined, even briefly. The first of these problems is : at what period, in world civilization, docs the knotted mg appear, and in which country ? In primitive times, man resorted to the use of animal skins to fight against the cold rising from the ground and the walls.
